How to ensure the accuracy of your pregnancy test – Part 5
Am I pregnant? Although unlikely to make news headlines this question can consume every waking moment and block out all other thoughts until it is answered. The first step is always the question, the next step is often to pick up a home pregnancy test.
Pregnancy tests are most often one of two types. Cassette style, which require a drop of urine to be placed in a reservoir. The results are often given digitally, yes/no or +/-.
Absorbent tips are the common “urinate on a stick” variety. There are some tests available that mimic the ones used in the doctor’s office, a flimsy piece of paper dipped into a previously collected specimen. These come in boxes with more test strips than the average woman needs, but they may be useful for those trying to conceive who test often.
In general the cassette types need a bit longer to predict pregnancy, the absorbent tip types are pretty much the same, name brand or generic. The tests are designed to respond to the level of HCG in a woman’s urine, which is the hormone that indicates pregnancy. The differences are simply how much of the hormone is needed to trigger a result. The absorbent tip need an average of 25 mIU to detect pregnancy, the cassette averages 50 mIU, . The abbreviation mIU is a term meaning one thousandth of an international unit or put simply, a form of measure. Basically the lower the number the less hormone needed to trigger a positive result. The bottom line however is the longer you wait after your missed period, the greater the chances are for the test to pick up the hormone. In very early pregnancy the hormone levels are more concentrated in the first mornings urine. What does this mean? Have the test ready if you can and use it when you get up first thing in the morning. This is harder than it sounds for the groggy early morning bathroom users. I forgot to use it twice because the call of nature was much louder than my “need to know”. A word of caution if you use a very early test (before or the day of your missed period) it can give you a false negative. There may not be enough hormone to detect yet. As the pregnancy progresses the hormone will double, that is to say on day 1 there is 30 mIu and on day 3 there is 68 mIu. My best advice is to buy a two test box and test first thing in the morning once. Wait at least three days and take the second. The absolute best results come from waiting at least a week after your missed cycle. Although the styles and types of pregnancy test will vary, no one type outshines the others in terms of results.

The Weight Loss Cure Book Advises That One Take Injections Of Hcg Hormone. Is It Safe?
I recently bought Kevin Trudeau’s The Weight Loss Cure They Don’t Want You to Know About. In it, he cites studies from the 1950’s that say that taking daily injections of the hormone hCG (125-250mg) and eating a 500 calorie a day diet is a safe way to lose weight and stop food cravings.
I am a diabetic, so I know that any hormone can be life changing and can effect the whole body. Is there anyone who has used this regimen or otherwise knows about this hormone and would reccommend it?
Anyone Out There Start Out With A Low Hcg And End With A Healthy Pregnancy?
At the beginning of 5 weeks my hcg came back as 148. Now I’m 6 weeks (more bloodwork on Wed) and go in for an ultrasound on Thurs and am extremely nervous. By the end of last week my symptoms kicked in (sore bb’s, mild cramping, loss of appetite, increased cm), so I’m taking that as a good sign. Should I rely on the hcg numbers?
Book reviews: Natural Cures They Dont Want You to Know About, by Kevin Trudeau – Part 13
In the nineteenth century, quacks travelled through the pioneering settlements touting spurious cures for all manner of ailments. They would sell to the gullible and vulnerable and, of course, their products had no curative or medically beneficial effects. Kevin Trudeau has brought this practice into the twenty first century with alarming ease. Marketing himself as a consumer advocate battling the evil medical establishment who are doing all they can to silence him, he has caught the imagination of the American public. His smoke and mirrors approach is particularly effective as he latches onto real scandals and issues with healthcare in the US and then purports to have the answers, which he sets out in his best-selling book, Natural Cures They Don’t Want You To Know About.
The book and accompanying publicity makes a number of unsubstantiated claims mixed in with perceived wisdom in an effort to lend support. This is a clever ploy as people will be able to identify from their day to day experience the veracity of some of the advice, such as eating a balanced and healthy diet, avoid processed foods where possible and undergo some form of detoxing on a regular basis. This lends credence to the more unusual advice which people may be fooled into accepting as truth on the basis of the known good advice. This may have been adopted as a marketing ploy in the absence of any credibility of the author, either as a medical practitioner, someone with medical knowledge or a trustworthy expert. While some of the advice is simply spurious, some medical practitioners have pointed to some potentially harmful side effects of what the book advocates. For example, the book suggests that in order to detoxify your body you should undergo colonic irrigation every other day over a month. This might however cause harm and so should not be undertaken without at least consulting someone who does have medical knowledge.
This is not the first of Mr Trudeau’s entrance to the world of providing expert advice on subjects in which he is not an expert. This has included advertising his Mega Memory System, Eden’s Secret Nature’s Purifying Product and Sable Hair Farming System. In these he was accused by the FTC of making false or unsubstantiated claims. He also spent two years in prison for credit card fraud and had to settle out of court in relation to accusations of running a pyramid selling scheme. In 2003, he was fined $2 million dollars and banned in perpetuity from appearing in infomercials or advertising products and services to the public. This followed the FTC challenging his claims that calcium could cure cancer, claims which the FTC successfully argued were unsubstantiated. He is able to continue to market his books under protection of the first amendment.
This man has been very successful at making money off the back of his claims, but before you add to his fortune I would urge you to ask yourself whether you really believe he is the victim of a conspiracy to silence him to protect corporate profits or whether it is more likely that he is simply out to make profit wherever he can without regard to any damage he might do. You will have to decide for yourself.
What Happens If Your Hcg Levels Are Not Rising As They Should?
I often see on here ladies talking about how they are having their hcg levels monitored in early pregnancy. I think that this is quite common in the States, but it almost never gets done in the UK (where I live)
So my question is, what happens if they aren’t doubling as they should and the numbers don’t look good. Does the ob/gyn just tell you to expect a miscarriage or is there something that can be done?
