Overview: Molar pregnancy

June 29, 2009 · Posted in Fertility · Comment

A Molar Pregnancy, medically known as a Hydatidiform Mole, is an abnormality of the placenta (afterbirth), caused by a problem when the egg ans sperm join together at fertilisation. Molar Pregnancies are ‘accidents of nature’ that are not anyone’s fault and are not caused by behaviour.

Once detected a D&C operation must be performed to remove all retained products and HCG in the blood is monitored. If the HCG plateus or increases, it means that it has grown from microscopic cells in the wall of the uterus to larger cells. These cells act like cancer and can metastasize (spread) to other organs, namely the brain, lungs and bones. This is known as Trophablastic disease and is cured with a chemotherapy drug, methotrexate.

Once cured, if the patient waits at least 1 year after the ‘all clear’ the chance of another pregnancy is 1 per cent. However, during the first year, the risk increases to 75 per cent.

The next pregnancy will require an ultrasound scan at 5-6 weks and after birth the placenta should be sent to a pathologist to ensure there are no abnormal area’s.

The Elixir Of Life In The Office

June 27, 2009 · Posted in HCG · Comment

The one thing that I have found when working in an office environment is that I tend to neglect myself somewhat by forgetting to keep up with my water intake, finding myself feeling lethargic and dehydrated even if there are floor standing water dispensers at each corner of the building.

Most people underestimate the importance of hydration. It is common for people not to realise that they are dehydrating, until much later on in the day when it is too late to make up for the lost fluid. The most important part of keeping track of one’s health and well-being is monitoring the amount of water consumption in a day. Unfortunately, the most common beverage in an office or any work environment is tea or coffee. More people consume caffeine based drinks rather than pouring themselves water from water dispensers or the tap and then thinking that this counts towards their daily water intake.

Caffeine is both a stimulant and a diuretic, meaning it dehydrates the body. Therefore, when people consume more tea and coffee on a daily basis they are in fact losing fluid from their body. Though caffeine does provide an individual with stimulants, it is in fact doing more harm to the body than they know. We as humans are absolutely dependant on water and it is vital that we maintain a good balance in water consumption. For this reason, many work environments (namely offices) have water dispensers available.

History

Drinking safe water was a key issue in the past. Early water treatments and purifications can be dated back as far as 2000 BC, whereby treatment consisted of boiling the water, or placing a hot metal in the water to filter it through from sand or charcoal. Many years later, until the invention of the microscope, water filtration changed dramatically. Scientists and researchers were able to view tiny water particles and determine whether the water was clean or not. It also helped scientists connect certain diseases related to poor quality water such as cholera, and was able to decrease the number of cholera outbreak by improving water filtration systems.

Water Coolers have been around since the 1900s, whereby large blocks of ice were used to chill the water.
Electric coolers were then created in 1938, following a variant supply of water cooling devices and many more improvements in the design. Many researchers during this period were already aware of the importance of water for a healthy lifestyle. Bottled water dispensers have been around since before the mid twentieth century, with water cooling units introduced later on.

As well as offering a cool water to drink, many units offer a heating device, providing instant heated water along with cooled water. The units are also available in many shapes and colours and can even be available with fancy electrical devices and LCD screens. However, the most common and popular water units are freestanding bottled units that depend on gravity to provide water.

Some are also designed with different modes and settings such as, energy saving features, temperature control and for purity a bacteriostatic water tube. It is very rare these days for offices not to provide water units for staff, therefore people do not have to go out and buy a bottle of water separately. Though, that being said, it is the responsibility of the individual to maintain their water intake regularly and with free water available there really is no excuse!

Weight Loss 101: Deciding if Hcg is Right for you

June 25, 2009 · Posted in HCG · Comment

“HCG has been receiving a great deal of attention lately as a potential weight loss cure for those battling the bulge. Although there are certainly plenty of businesses out there that are touting HCG as a miracle cure for the obese, there are many things that you need to consider when deciding whether or not HCG is right for you.

Considering Safety

HCG is considered a safe hormone to take. In fact, it is produced naturally in women during pregnancy and the amount of HCG in pregnant women far exceed the amount taken to aid in weight loss. Nonetheless, the FDA still has not approved HCG for use in weight loss. The hormone has been approved by the FDA for other purposes, namely for assisting with hormonal problems and fertility difficulty, but not for the specific purpose of weight loss. Therefore, if you are someone that would rather wait until a treatment program has been thoroughly tested by the FDA, you might want to wait on this treatment program. If you are someone that is willing to try a treatment program that is recognized as safe and that has worked for many other people, on the other hand, you might want to give it a try.

Think About Finances

If you are interested in using an HCG treatment program to help you lose weight, you will need to be prepared to spend some money out of your pocket. Most insurance companies don’t cover the expenses associated with HCG weight loss treatments. Therefore, you will need to cover the expenses on your own.

Know Yourself

Currently, the HCG weight loss treatment plan involves getting injections of the HCG hormone on a regular basis. If you are someone that gets weak in the knees at the thought of a needle coming anywhere near you, you might want to stay away from this diet program.

If you are pregnant or nursing, you also will not be able to participate in the HCG weight loss program. Although there is nothing to indicate that the HCG program will cause problems for women that are pregnant or nursing, there is no specific research demonstrating that it is safe either. Therefore, in order to keep your unborn fetus or your newborn baby safe, you will need to wait until your baby is born and you are no longer nursing.

If you have the money for the HCG weight loss program, you are not pregnant or nursing, and you are not overly squeamish around needles, this might be the right program for you. Whether you are a man or a woman, this weight loss program may finally be the answer you have been looking for to get your body in shape and to live a healthier lifestyle.”

Teenage Pregnancy – Getting a Pregnancy Test

June 23, 2009 · Posted in Human Chorionic Gonadotropin · Comment

Pregnancy tests that you can take at home are one of the most sensible purchases you will ever make. Not only are they quite economical, but they will give you a piece of mind that you just can’t put a price on. Pregnancy tests are always available at your nearest Pregnancy Center. These tests are true first urine tests. These are looking for the human hormone that is generated by pregnancy.

These tests are preferably performed early in the morning with your “first urine” of the morning. Pregnancy can be detected as early as 10 days past conception with a concentrated urine sample.

These test kits for the detection of HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in serum or urine specimens. This test kit is used to obtain a visual, qualitative result for early detection of pregnancy. More importantly, the more options you have that are available to you, especially if the pregnancy is not a planned one,

1. Free Pregnancy Testing

It is believed by many that young girls should have access to free pregnancy testing options. If they have had unprotected sex, then speaking to a school councilor or youth leader will help to locate the nearest free testing facility or womens centre. Some highschools even carry these testing kits in the nurses office.

2. The Concequences Are Not Worth It

Many young girls feel embarrassed about seeking help, or afraid that their parents will find out. In this case they need to ask the people about confidentiality issues prior to telling them what it is they need. In the event that the girl is in fact pregnant then she should be given the opportunity to tell her parents on her own. There are, of course, some exceptions to this rule. For example, if the girl becomes an immediate danger to herself or others after finding out the results of the tests – perhaps becoming suicidal – then there is just cause for a counsellor to contact the parents or other experts regarding everything.

Later Signs of Teen Pregnancy

As a pregnancy progresses, the signs and symptoms become more pronounced and harder for teens to miss. Some of these pregnancy signs include:

* an enlargement of the abdomen

* weight gain or loss

* aches such as backaches or headaches

* quickening (feeling of fetal movement)

Unplanned Pregnancy

It is likely that the pregnancy is an unplanned one (due to your age), and is common to feel shocked, scared, panicked, confused, embarrassed, isolated or lonely. Parents, boyfriend and professionals are all there to help support and give you advice/information on the options available to you, but only you can make the choice to continue with the pregnancy or not. Its a decision that should be made based on what YOU want to do and not what others think you should do.

Guide to pregnancy – Part 1

Pregnancy Signs

Pregnancy signs vary by person. Some of the most common ones are:

Missed or abnormal period

Nausea

Fatigue

Sore and/or enlarged breasts

Unexplained cravings

Positive pregnancy test

Changes in libido

Increased appetite

Enlarged abdomen

Frequent urination.

Stretch marks

Pregnancy Magazines

Many pregnancy magazines are available. Some popular ones are:

Fit Pregnancy

Parents

Parenting

Pregnancy and Newborn

Your Pregnancy

American Baby

Conceive

Birth

Mother and Baby

And don’t forget People and US, so you can see what celebrities are pregnant too.

Get Pregnant

If a woman wants to get pregnant, it helps to understand the menstrual cycle. There are only a few days during the cycle that the egg is able to be fertilized by the sperm. Learning about the causes of male and female fertility will increase the chances of getting pregnant.

Diabetic Pregnancy

Diabetes can lead to complications during pregnancy or cause problems to the fetus. A person with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes needs to manage her diabetes carefully. Some women develop gestational diabetes, which must be managed through diet, exercise, and possibly insulin to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

Pregnancy Information

While everyone has advice for the mom-to-be, some sources of information are more reliable than others. Be certain to talk to your doctor or medical health professional for the most up to date information about pregnancy to help you navigate all the choices available.

Pregnancy Calendars

Pregnancy calendars can help a mom-to-be stay follow the development of the baby as well as be aware of her own changes. In addition, a pregnancy calendar can remind a mom-to-be of important appointments. Calendars usually cover a time period of 40 weeks, or 9 months.

Twins

Twins are becoming more common with the use of fertility drugs. Identical twins occur when a single fertilized egg splits and becomes two separate fetuses. These twins will have identical genetic material. Fraternal twins occur when two eggs are fertilized by two different sperm.

Names

Choosing a name is an important task, as the baby will have it for the rest of his or her life (hopefully). Popular names vary over time. Some people choose a name based on a favorite relative, friend, literary character, or TV show. Biblical names are always popular.

Pregnancy Test

A pregnancy test is used to determine if fertilization has occurred. Most pregnancy tests measure the presence of hCG in the urine. Pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate, and are known to give false positives and negatives. An ultrasound is used to confirm the results.

Pregnant.

Being pregnant is a special time in life, a brief and sometimes challenging gift. While it may seem daunting at the start, having a child is the best possible event that can occur. There are many resources available, so be certain to take advantage of them and ENJOY.

Your Body-pregnancy

June 18, 2009 · Posted in Fertility · Comment

Profound changes occur in your body with in days of conceiving. in the first week you may feel surprisingly tired and as the weeks go by you will notice increasing breast tenderness and probably one of the worst effects of early pregnancy nausea. The changes in your body happen as a result of hormone levels that soar dramatically during pregnancy.

Hormonal Changes

Soon after conception, when the fertilized egg embeds in the lining of the uterus, the levels of two pregnancy hormones begin to rise. These hormones are progesterone, which is important in helping to maintain your pregnancy and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). Progesterone has many effects on your body, one of which is to relax smooth muscle. We have this type of muscle in our internal organs such as the intestines and uterus. Smooth muscle relaxation is critical in pregnancy because the uterus must stretch, other wise uterine contractions might cause preterm labor or miscarriage. You have a lot of other smooth muscles in your body that are also affected by progesterone. One of the first symptoms of progesterone you may notice is relaxation of your intestinal smooth muscle, which results in a lot of bloating and gas. Progesterone also profoundly affect the way you breathe, increasing how quickly you breathe and how deeply. Expect to feel short of breath when you walk up stairs, even if you are in good shape. Pregnancy hormones make your breasts very sore and your breasts will start to enlarge.

The first trimester is also the beginning of a profound set of changes in your heart and circulation. The amount of blood pumping around your body starts to increase dramatically and your heart has to work harder. As the uterus starts to enlarge it may press on the bladder, and you may feel the urge to urinate more frequently than usual. Even though this is annoying, don’t be tempted to start drinking less fluid. Instead, take frequent bathroom breaks and wear clothes that are not a nightmare to get in and out of.

Feeling Exhausted

Most women feel exhausted much of the time in these first few months. While this is absolutely normal, it can be frustrating. Even if you are getting enough sleep, you may feel like you need a nap by 10am. This can make functioning at your job or taking care of your family feel particularly onerous.

In a perfect world you should give in to these feelings and take frequent naps. For many of us, this is not possible. If you can, allow your self to slow down to whatever extent is possible. Don’t feel guilty about going to sleep as early as you want to, and skip evening social events if you don’t feel up to it. Let your partner organize meals, and pamper your self whenever you can.

Book reviews: Natural Cures They Dont Want You to Know About, by Kevin Trudeau – Part 5

June 16, 2009 · Posted in Kevin Trudeau · Comment

Kevin Trudeau, carnival barker or hero, has brought a lot of attention to natural sources for alternatives to health care. Late at night when cramps are hurting, stomachs are aching, the TV is on and you are looking at the screen, hearing and seeing someone telling you that for a certain amount of money for his book, that miraculously all your pain will disappear without waiting in line at the Doctor’s office. Who is this man of wonder who can promise you such things?

Kevin Trudeau has had a shady past but it does not take away from his marketing skills. He is on the right track to making his fame and fortune but this time he is doing a good thing by informing the public that they don’t have to be held hostage by the drug companies. Natural alternatives for health care have been around forever but the knowledge of how to use the things in front of us has now been brought to the public so as to have a choice.

I have witnessed miracles from simple thing such as juicing green vegetables, using apple cider vinegar, drinking herbal teas, and using sorrel and burdock root in a native formula called cassia tea for cancer cells. No one in the health food business ever mentions the word “Cure” and they always advise to consult your Doctor before changing to natural. From cleansing and detoxing your body to substituting Red Rice Yeast for cholesterol, just go to your nearest health care store and start looking for healthy ways to make your life better.

When it all comes down to the natural ways have made you feel better, then it won’t matter whether Kevin Trudeau is a crook or a marketing genius.

Early Pregnancy Signs

June 16, 2009 · Posted in Testing · Comment

Whether you are trying to get pregnant, or have been given a surprise by the news – there are ways of detecting pregnancy through normal body functions and changes, sometimes even before a missed monthly period. Of course, the most accurate sign of pregnancy is a missed period. Often, after a period has been missed a pregnancy test will read accurately. Most women become suspicious if they have regular periods, and even a day or two late is an irregular occurrence.

As motherly as it sounds, food cravings can often be a sign of pregnancy. From popcorn to chocolate, these cravings may come at unnatural times and be a sure sign of early pregnancy. Are you experiencing cravings for food that you regularly avoid? This could be a sign of early pregnancy.

Tender or sore breasts are another sign of early pregnancy. With the hormone fluctuations that occur within the body, this can be a variable sign of pregnancy. Some women report that breasts feel heavier, sore, or even larger or engorged with the preparations that occur to accommodate the changes within the body. Darkening of the areolas may occur. What causes the darkening? Hormone fluctuations within the body can create these imbalances which cerate the darkening of the areolas. Sometimes in early pregnancy, an act as simple as a caress or wearing an uncomfortable bra can be a terrible experience. Not to worry, this pain usually subsides as the body adjusts to the pregnancy.

The increased levels of HCG within the body can have varying effects on each woman. For most, these increased HCG levels create the need for frequent urination.

Your body is working overtime to prepare for the pregnancy and the birth of the baby and with these increased workloads come fatigue. Fatigue is often one of the first signs in early pregnancy and could make something as simple as a day of errands feel like an exhausting task that warrants a nap. You can blame this on the increased levels of progesterone that are being produced within the body.

Morning sickness doesn’t just occur in the morning. Ask anyone who has gone through a pregnancy and suffered from the constant nausea and vomiting within the first trimester. Did you know that nausea can occur even two days after conception?

Along with morning sickness often comes an increased sense of smell as some say that this is nature’s way of protecting the mother from ingesting anything that may be harmful to the baby. Simply put, if you can smell garlic from down the block, or beer on your partner’s breath from across the room, you just might want to take that pregnancy test. An increase in post nasal drip or a nose that will not stop running is one of the signs of pregnancy as the nose is not exempt from the discharge which is increased through the body.

An increase in cervical discharge is an early indicator of pregnancy. This clear substance can be more pronounced even two to five days after conception.

Are Glycoproteins Good For The Body?

June 14, 2009 · Posted in Human Chorionic Gonadotropin · Comment

The name glycoprotein describes the molecule. It consists of protein and carbohydrates.

The monosaccharides which are available in the glycoproteins may be glucose, mannose, xylose , N-acetylgulcosamine, galactose, and others.

Addition of sugar to protein is called as glycosylation. Glycosylation may be N-glycosylation or O-glycosylation. The type of glycosylation depends on the addition of the sugar. In N-glycosylation, sugar is added to asparagine. In O-glycosylation, sugar is added to serine, hydroxylysine, hydroxyproline, or theonine.

Mucin is a glycoprotein available in the human body. Sugars are attached to mucins. So mucins are able to hold water . They are also proteolysis resistant to the digestive enzymes.

Antibodies are glycoproteins. These glycoproteins interact with the antigens. Major Histocompatibility complex or MHC molecules are also glycoproteins. They act with T cells.

Some others are zona pellucida components needed for sperm-egg interaction, structural glycoproteins which help in binding tissues. Glycoproteins in egg white and blood plasma.

Some of the glycoproteins, which are hormones, are Erythropoietin, Human chorionic gonadotropin, Follocle stimulating hormone,Thyroid stimulating hormone, Luteinizing hormone, and Alpha-fetoprotein.

The carbohydrate that constitute the glycoprotein are generally branched and short. They may be of several types. They may be made of chains of sugars like glucose, galactose etc. They may be chain of amino sugars or sugar that contains amino group. They may be chains of acidic sugars or sugars that contain carboxyl group.

What is the benefit of these sugars? They provide the glycoproteins of some special features. Glycoproteins are hydrophilic because of presence of the OH groups in the sugars. These OH groups are necessary for folding proteins into their tertiary structure.

Glycoproteins, which are soluble, show a high viscosity. Immune cell recognition is a work that needs glycoproteins.

CHO in glycoproteins has a big role. It directs folding of proteins. Protein folding takes place at the ER (Endoplasmic Reticulum). In absence or inhibition of glycoproteins, protein misfolding takes place.

From Glyconutrients you can get glycoproteins. In Golgi body present in the body, mannose sugar binds with N-acetylglucosamine. Then the molecule goes to the ER. In the ER it forms glycoproteins by binding with proteins.

Why are glycoproteins so important? It is important because almost 85% of the molecules are glycoproteins in the human body. So, it can affect the human body badly if it is not produced in the body. Cells, tissues, antibodies, enzymes, muscle fibre, hormones etc will not be created if the production of the glycoprotein is not sufficient. Then you can well imagine the chaos that will follow. If enzymes are not produced or provided with the needed food, then they will not be able to act. Then most of the functions in your body will not take place. You will not be able to thrive.

When may it not be produced? When there is any deficiency of sugars in the body, then production of glycoproteins may be disturbed.

Glycoproteins are of great importance to the body for which your body needs two things- sugars and proteins. The mechanism is well maintained. You just need to ensure that there is a constant supply of sugars through your food.

The earliest symptoms of pregnancy – Part 2

June 13, 2009 · Posted in Fertility · Comment

If you are reading this, you are probably trying to get pregnant and can’t wait to know, or you are afraid you might be!

Well first lets know how soon can you tell if you are pregnant or not:

Not before implantation. That happens 6-12 days after ovulation that’s when your body starts to produce the HCG hormone which all pregnancy tests detect to identify pregnancy.

Now every women is different, Ovulation normally occurs between day 11 and 22 (with day one the start of your period). A home pregnancy test can be used 10 days after ovulation but a negative test then doesn’t mean you are not pregnant. You have to miss your period by a day or two or even a week to make sure. Most home pregnancy test now are accurate, but it’s a beta HCG blood test that tells for sure and is the fastest way (10 days after ovulation).

Now if you have missed your period and looking for symptoms take care that most of the symptoms can be due to stress preventing your period to show up, but it can also mean pregnancy, some of them are:

1. Missed period: Sign number one.

2. Breast Tenderness: Tender, swollen and sore breasts are one of the early signs. You may notice this pregnancy sign at bedtime or when getting dressed. Your nipples may feel sore or extra sensitive.

3. Fatigue and exhaustion: You will notice you start going to bed sooner,.

4. Frequent Urination: The swelling uterus can put pressure on your bladder, also pregnancy causes extra body fluids to be processed by your kidneys and bladder.

5. Nausea: Dividing your meals into smaller portions can help with these.

6. Heartburn and dizziness: Going upstairs or standing suddenly can make you feel light headed.

7. Morning sickness: It doesn’t have to be in the morning, it can hit you anytime of the day. Try to eat something before you get out of bed. Don’t drink you tea/coffee before eating something first.

8. Mood Swings: The raging hormones will cause this.

9. Higher body temperature: After implantation the body temperature may rise slightly and remains hight.

10. Low back pain: Similar to that before you period, it increases with the advance of pregnancy due to the weight the gain.

11. Implantation bleeding: That will be few drops of bright red blood a couple of days before your period. Not all women experience implantation bleeding so it is not considered one of the most obvious pregnancy signs.

Well, if you turned out pregnant, Congrats and enjoy every moment. :)
